Adega de Pegões – 2010 – White

A field blend of 3 local Portuguese varieties (Arinto, Verdelho and Antão Vaz) together with some Chardonnay. From a cooperative on the Setúbal peninsula, to the south of Lisbon.

It has the straw yellow look of oaked Chardonnay about it, no hint of green. Plenty of toasty oak on the bouquet. N1 tastes it and starts singing, “bananas in pyjamas are coming down the stairs”, running through bananas and cream then banana milkshake as a tasting note, before deciding definitively on banana smoothie. It isn’t as tropical or as banana-driven as some wines I’ve had, but that’s certainly the general direction. There is a little green fruit underlying the riper fruit (green bananas, like olive oil?) and the oak expresses itself rather like cashew nuts. Not a complex or very well integrated wine, and structurally somewhat on the flabby side of sharp.

81/100
