Paul Dolan – Zinfandel – 2005

Surprisingly pale colour: a very transparent cherry red, with a little bricking. Brambly fruit, exactly the sort of fruit one gets from a lot of red Rioja (but emphatically not a heavily-oak driven wine in the way of traditional Rioja). Slightly woody at first, but the oak does seem to get more prominent with time. The bright acidity makes the brambles on the nose seem more like cranberries on the palate; tannins are smooth, and lower than expected. A cleansing, herbal finish. Quite a secondary wine, with sweet but not jammy fruit. Sometimes Zinfandels made in a heavier style seem to stay primary into old age, but that is not the case here. Lovely wine, although after a glass I found myself pining for a little savoury to set against the sweet. This was better the next day; slightly fermented flavours had come to the fore, making it reminiscent of bitter cola.

87/100
